In December 1983 Mr. Arundel gave the basic land for the race course to the non-profit Meadow Outdoors Foundation which then became the trustees and managers of the race course. The Foundation is headed by four trustees — George L. Ohretrom of New York and The Plains, Maximilian A. Tufts and Allen L. Olson of Warrenton and Mr. Arundel.
Following Mr. Arundel’s gift of the land and a newly required tax deductible status for the field events center, donations to the site began to come in from the local community to help complete the Great Meadow facilities.
One of the most recent, and noticeable, gifts to the foundation was the $50,000 sound system used at the Los Angeles Coliseum for the 1984 Summer Olympics.
This system, along with the recently constructed steward’s stand, was tested, Sunday, Sept. 9, when Great Meadow was officially opened to the public, just over a month before its first race meet, Oct. 20.
