About 110,000 agriculture workers will have a disabling injury. The injury rate is such that about one out of every 25 workers can expect to be injured, said Hetzel, who is a member of the faculty of Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Those working with animals are likely to be injured most. The rate is 16.5 percent of injuries due to animals; 16.3 percent to machinery; and eight percent tractor related.
Of the injuries, 65.3 percent are severe enough to require medical attention; 30 percent are slight; but 1.9 percent result in permanent disability. About .6 of the injuries result in death.
