The Virginia fall steeplechase circuit welcomes a newcomer to its ranks this season with the inaugural running of the Great Meadow races Saturday, Oct. 20.
“This new meet should be very exciting,” said William Gallo Jr., racing secretary of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association (NSHA), the governing body of American steeplechase races. “It is always interesting to look on a new horizon in this sport and it is nice to see the sport expanding on the hunt meet level.”
The history of Great Meadow began some nine or ten miles away at Broadview Farm at Warrenton where the famed Virginia Gold Cup was run from 1935 to 1984.
Brdadview’s location on the outskirts of Warrenton makes it a prime site for future development, and for its last 20 years at the course the Gold Cup Race Committee knew that it was only a matter of time before they lost the race course to “urban development”. Unfortunately they did not have the hinds to buy the Broadview site themselves.
