In 1981 the race committee was informed by Broad view’s owners that they could only stay at the course a maximum of four more years at which time their lease would run out.
In order to try to find a new site to keep the historic 60-year-old timber race going, the Gold Cup race committee formed another committee from its own ranks. Heading the committee was Arthur W. “Nick” Arundel, a news executive from The Plains.
The site that Mr. Arundel found for the Gold Cup was Great Meadow, approximately nine miles from Warrenton near the small town of The Plains.
“In January 1982 on the steps of the Warrenton courthouse I bought what is now Great Meadow in a bankruptcy foreclosure auction for $2 million,” Mr. Aran
