won a race are entered in a maiden race. Once they “break their maiden” the horses can be entered in a variety of races.
Usually the next race after a horse has won its maiden would be a non-winners of two. But an owner or trainer could decide to enter his horse in a race for the horse’s age group if the conditions are right and he feels his horse is good enough.
All steeplechasers are thoroughbreds and all thoroughbreds have an official birthday Jan. 1, regardless of whether they were bom Jan.l or Dec. 31 of the previous year.
The earliest a steeplechase horse can start its racing career is as a three-yearold, and usually in the fall of its threeyear-old year. Usually a three-year-old will race against other horses of its age group, unless it has shown exceptional performance and ability in earlier races or training.
Retirement age for steeplechasers varies, but a good jumper can keep going until he is 13 or 14 years old, older if he is
