It’s a shame more parents and more pupils didn’t attend “Back-to-School” night, an informal open house that took place at the elementary school last Thursday evening.
At first, it looked like a respectable crowd had gathered in the gymnasium for the welcome Mid opening remarks. Upon introduction of teachers and staff, however, it became obvious that they made up nearly half of the attendees.
The sparse turnout didn’t inhibit the spirit, however. Teachers and administrators appeared thrilled to see parents, however few, and eager to answer their questions.
The response to the program - or lack of it - makes us wonder about priorities in the county. Just a month ago, we watched some 400 anxious citizens storm the same gymnasium to discuss the county’s proposed zoning ordinance. Many said they were concerned about the future of their children in Rappahannock County.
Parental support and direct involvement in the schools also is fundamental to future generations. Parents, by taking an interest in something as simple as a child’s classroom, can boost a student’s pride and enthusiasm.
