Bluemont Fair
Both families and community joined together in Bluemont last week for a truly old fashioned fair, focused on the town, its residents and the creation of their hands—innumerable crafts and demonstrations by local craftsperaons; a three woman art show by local painters; sales of dried flowers, produce, baked goods and preserves; a game of horseshoes behind the general store; a temporary ice cream parlor in the basement of the town’s oldest house. Even more significant was the Children’s Fair, designed to pass on the appreciation for the intrinsic value of the work of the hands: a quilt each child could stitch on; tables for drawing, painting and jewelery making; a huge sheet strewn with blocks of wood hammers and boxes of nails for carpentry; patient young girls ready to paint any design imaginable onto the children’s faces; and a petting zoo foil of loving and gentle form animals from a local form.
