horse can brush its legs through them without danger, and because of this these races are a lot faster than timber races.
Horses that start racing over hurdles and then progress to timber are usually not used to lifting their legs as high and require several months of training over these unforgiving jumps before they can race safely.
A flat race, as it sounds, is a straight horse race on the grass without any fences. These races are often only a mile or a mile and a half long and can therefore be very exciting as there is usually not too much difference between the best horses in a flat race.
Flat races are a good way to introduce a young potential steeplechaser to competition without too much danger of injury. Many trainers also use flat races at meets early in the season to get their veteran steeplechasers in shape for later meets.
For each race at a steeplechase meet, the NSHA sets conditions that a horse must satisfy in order to be eligible. There are a wide variety of different types of race conditions.
