Sid Gottleib is getting a great ■deal of satisfaction from working as a volunteer with patients for the Hospice of the Rapidan.
The Hospice of the Rapidan provides services for patients with terminal illnesses in Rappahannock, ^Culpeper, Madison and Orange i-counties. The hospice usually be"bomes involved when the medical ^prognosis is that the patient has six ^months to live, Mr. Gottleib said. He •added that this can be “highly inacnnirate.” His first patient lived for a Tyear and a half. 1. A team, consisting of a nurse, a ^social worker, and a coordinator of volunteers visits the patient and his r«r her family. “We don’t come in unless the patient agrees he needs hospice care,” Mr. Gottleib said. “ The hospice then works to match • the patient with a volunteer who will make home visits. Mr. Gottleib said he has worked with 12 patients since he started in 1984, and since he is one of the few volunteers who is a man, nine of his patients have been men.
