It’s apple season again! Rappahannock County ranks sixth in apple producing counties in Virginia. Six popular varieties grown in Virginia make up 90 percent of all apples grown in Virginia. These are: red delicious, golden delicious, rome, stavman, winesap and york.

We've all heard the expression “an apple a day will keep the doctor away. . .” Even though this refers to general good nutrition as a preventative measure against poor health, it is certainly true that “an apple a day is a healthy way’” to get certain nutrients that our bodies need.

An average-size apple is approximately 80 calories, which is great for people watching their weight and who want a low-calorie snack. An apple has no cholesterol and is low in sodium.

The main nutritional value of apples is that they are high in complex carbohydrates and high in fiber.
