The Virginia Gold Cup Association recently announced that Dick Francis, renowned mystery author and former steeplechase jockey for England’s Queen Mother, will serve as a race steward for this year’s races, a title he has held since 1989.
Francis, who turned to writing mystery novels after retiring from jump-racing at the height of his career as a jockey, is popular with steeplechase fans, probably due in part to the racing action portrayed in many of his books.
By mid-October, Great Meadow is being readied for the International Gold Cup Races: parking strips have been moved into the turf, jumps have been repaired or replaced, and race and corporate sponsor tents are erected. Like most American steeplechase course, Great Meadow has few permanent buildings. There are no grandstands — spectators watch the races from the rail, from their tailgate parties, from their tents, and from the surrounding hillsides. The entire course, considered by some to be one of the nation’s finest, can be seen from the grassy meadows which create a natural amphitheater around the course.
