“The master’s program did not have a thesis requirement,” said Susan, “but rather an intership program. I went to Lexington (Kentucky) to work at Pillar Stud for, my one year and ended up staying on.”
She rose to being assistant broodmare manager at the famed bluegrass stud farm, until deciding in 1985 to move on in the horse world.
From Lexington, the road led to Camden, S.C., a winter center for many northern trainers.
“A friend told me that Charlie Cushman needed people to gallop his racehorses,” laughed Mrs. Cooney, “so I figured my teenage horse-show experience was enough — I had never galloped a racehorse before. The first ride I had was on a just-broken twoyear-old Mr. Cushman put me on and said, ‘Go gallop her a mile.’ I stayed with Cush for seven years!”
