Later we were approached by a representative from the soccer league as to whether they were to receive some of the money. We asked John McCarthy, the county administrator, to check on this for us, and he informed us the record showed the request and the vote by the Board of Supervisors indicated the financial assistance was to go to the Rappahannock Athletic Association.
I would also like to make clear another misconception. The 250 children registered to play baseball in the RAA youth baseball program live in Sperryville, Woodville, Washington, Flint Hill, Castleton, and Chester Gap, as well as Amissville.
The children play baseball in two locations, Stuart Field in Amissville and Pullen Memorial Field in Sperryville. This last season we spent $3,446 in field improvements at Pullen and $3,454 at Stuart. The RAA is a county-wide youth baseball program.
Anyone who has been involved with any children’s sports activity will understand how expensive they are to run. Insurance, safety equipment, and field maintenance are just part of the expenses that are incurred. With an annual budget of approximately $20,000, the RAA was very appreciative of the financial assistance the county gave last year.
