better.”

One of the elements to the Earthstory in Rappahannock was a “shamanic journey,” a hike featuring drumming that was designed to show participants how they are connected to the animal kingdom.

Last Friday several group members conducted a Council of All Beings with a reporter from National Public Radio present. The Council consists of masked participants sitting in a circle and taking on the character of various forms of life (and other physical phenonomena). On Friday the anthropomorphized “beings” included microphagi, a grizzly bear, soil, the cow, the fox, the “forgotten places” (dead rivers, clear cut forests, etc.), the whale and others.

Each being, speaking through the actor, would voice its concern for the problems man has caused for its environment.

The final workshop, “Gender and Deep Ecology,” was scheduled to be finished on Wednesday, ending the retreat.

Mr. Harris said he and others from Rappahannock were changed forever by the experience.
