During the events occunng in Susan’s life, Patrick Joseph Cooney was growing up 45 minutes from Dublin, Ireland, in the village of Dundalk, County Louth.
The sixth of 12 boys and girls, Patrick decided at a young age to follow his eldest brother’s footsteps.
“Michael, the oldest, was champion apprentice rider on the flat in 1979,” said Pat Cooney.
“My father was also involved with racehorses — he was the assistant trainer to Bunny C6x, a jump-trainer.”
Young Patrick first apprenticed himself to Paddy Mullins, riding his first winner on the flat for that famed trainer. In fact, said Pat, “I had my first jump ride for Mullins. That was also my first jump win.”
