In 1990, the International Gold Cup Races’ featured race, the Sovran International Gold Cup, was awarded stakes designation by the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, a title granted on the basis of purse structure and on the race’s history of attracting top class horse.

That same year, attendance nearly doubled when spectators numbered close to 20,000, making it one of the largest steeplechase races in Virginia as well as one of the richest timber races in the country. Total purses for the day’s races now exceed $75,000.
