“The label on the jam may be upside down preventing it from going on a grocer’s shelf but there is nothing wrong with the contents,’’ she said, adding each month the bag is different.
“You never know what you are going to get,” she said, adding it adds for creative cooking.
“September is a really tough month for many people,” said the local coordinator, adding with school expenses, upcoming taxes, unemployment and pending holidays, “many could accept this as a way to stretch the budget.”
“This is not a get and gimme sort of thing,” she said, adding some may think “this is welfare. It’s not.”
“This is a way for people to break out of their isolation of feeling like they are the only ones hurting,” she said, adding “the community service offers a social aspect that pulls people together.”
“This is a means to help,” she said, adding, each month all extra foods and groceries not received are given to Social Services, a program like this would be a great project for groups like 4-H or church groups.
“Thirteen dollars is not alot of money for a group to put forth, and two hours of time is less,” she said, adding someone could receive help while another could be given the food.
“Self-help is the key, here,” said Ms. McEvoy, adding “community service is a vital service in keeping a community together.”
