fered a job schooling horses at a farm in Hume, she gladly accepted the change. After communting for several months, she moved to Main Street in Warrenton and continued to paint and work on her thesis.
Ms. Duke was commissioned by the Partnership for Warrenton to do an original painting to adorn the invitation for its upcoming “Evening Under the Stars” set for Sept. 21 on Courthouse Square.
Working with Michael Welton, a Partnership board member and the designer of the invitation, Ms. Duke created the medieval-style painting for the 4year-old event.
The painting was a challenge for Ms. Duke, whose preferred medium is oil. Using the washes and different kinds of paint traditionally used by illustrators was interesting for her.
“Michael and I talked about his ideas. He liked the look of Maxfield Parrish’s work. We wanted it to be playful and fun, and at the same time have the facade of the courthouse very recognizable,” she said.
