He also expounded on his vision of a “Workfare” propram, under which able-bodied adults who are on food stamps and who are not working at least 20 hours a week would be required to complete community service work to remain qualified for public assistance.
“The problem is, we have a whole generation of people who believe the government owes them a living,” he said.
Not all of the details of Workfare have been ironed out, said Del. Allen, including the question of transportation to and from the community service work for those living in remote areas.
“There are local welfare boards and local governments that will want to make it work,” and fine-tune the idea, he said.
