There’s even an after-race party for which a limited number of tickets are available that will allow you to mingle with owners, trainers, jockeys and race officials. Upon request, the Virginia Gold Cup Association will send you an invitation to the races with details on the many viewing options. Whatever options you might decide on, the following is suggested, particularly if you’ve never been to Great Meadow:
Arrive early. Allow plenty of time to get situated so that you don’t miss anything. The gates open at 10 a.m., and pre-race events start around 11 a.m.
Buy a program as you drive in. The program has a schedule, a map of the course and many suggestions for understanding the races, including a key to reading the race pages. It is also filled with interesting tidbits on horses and steeplechase racing.
Wear confortable clothing suitable for the weather. Check weather conditions before you leave home and dress in layers if it is going to be cool. Although the third Saturday in October is almost always dry, if rain is predicted, pack rain coats and umbrellas — the races run rain or shine.
