the first big cash prize with a victory in the $45,000 A.P. Smith wick Handicap opening week and an unprecedented onetwo-three win in the featured $100,000 New York Turf Writers Cup, Aug. 15.

Two $20,000 claimers, four “non-winners other than maiden, claiming or starter” allowance races, two top handicaps, a “nonwinners of two other than maiden, claiming or starter” races and the featured New York Writers Cup completed the schedule.

Steeplechasing was featured every Wednesday and Thursday with purses ranging from $20,000 to $100,000-added.

Mrs. John C. Hopewell’s Billy King, with Graham Alcock up, won the $10,000 Maiden Steeplechase at the Saratoga Open House July 21. A special NYRA Open House program, which showcases the jumpers as part of a full day of activities, welcomed local fans to the Spa on the Sunday before the meet opening.
