A horseman who jumped on the bandwagon to Chile in the early ’60s is Camden, S.C., importer Charlie Cushman.
Cushman explained what he shops for. “The horse must be well-conformed, must be very, very sound, and he must show some speed,” he said in a May 5, 1989, Blood-Horse interview.
Though Cushman’s rules do not differ from standards elsewhere in the world, U.S. racing, he said, “stresses horses even more than in South America, because of the harder ground.”
Among winners Cushman recently imported and sold to American owners are Ulises (Chile), Maitenhuapi (Chile), Chicken (Chile), Rio Claro (Chile), and Topeador (Chile).
