SARATOGA, N.Y. — The cream of the steeplechasing crop put in one of the most impressive racing seasons ever at the fiveweek long NYRA meet in Saratoga Springs July 24 through August 22.
“Even with the strict NYRA eligibility rule for jumpers to onetwo-three finishers, all ten carded-races were filled, with the quality of racing at the Spa exceptional,” said William Gallo NSHA Racing Secretary.
Saratoga’s jump purses totalled $335,000. From that pool of funds, reigning 1990 NSHA leading trainer Jonathan Sheppard, with his strong string stabled at the Oklahoma Annex, swept a remarkable five of ten races.
Even though sustaining significant losses in ’90 with the demise of Summer Colony and Polar Pleasure and other major contenders being sidelined with injuries, Sheppard remains on top with such winners as Timber Bay Stable’s Yaw.
