On Open House day, Torsten Rothman’s Top Virginia was third in the $5,000 Maiden race; Kinross Farm’s Tuniche (Chile) third in the $10,000 Maiden race; and Farmwick Stable’s Key to the Max third in the $7,500 “nonwinners of three race.”
“This year saw more Virginia people than normal. They showed good courage and came to the meet with whdt they had,” said Kinross Farm’s trainer Pat Myer.
Myer, who campaigns a seven horse string for private owner Zohar Ben-Dov, saddled the Clever Trick full brother, Mihmaz, with Graham Aleock up, for an impressive stretch performance against William and Tina Entemann’s Timber Bay Farm stakes winner Yaw.
Clearly the meet star, Yaw, trained by Sheppard and ridden by Jonathan Smart, settled and gradually worked his way forward to win the $45,000 A.P. Smithwick Handicap by a neck over Kinross Farm’s Mihmaz.
Three Bells for Me, trained by Charles Fenwick, Jr. placed third.
