Family Life Education, the public schools’ sex ed program, has his support. “I believe our school administrations in all three counties have worked it through very well,” he said. Detailed studies on the program should be undertaken in the future to test its effectiveness and value, he said.

Wilder, he said, has “chutzpah,” but he added it “may be his weakness too.” The governor’s mix of social liberalism and fiscal conservatism, said Mr. Darby, is “an oxymoron,” and while he finds Gov. Wilder personally "an impressive man,” he predicted his presidential campaign will fail after the press looks deeper into Virginia’s fiscal mess.
During his first session in Richmond, said Mr. Darby, he will concentrate his efforts on educational issues and on a close examination of the state budget.
