The Iram family is quite popular in Virginia-based racing, as the D.M. “Speedy” Smithwick, Jr.-trained Topeador (Chile) and Rogers’ youngster Word of Honor (Chile) share the stallion’s parentage.
Word of Honor excelled over hurdles this past spring, winning three in a row.
“We are a timber oriented operation,” Rogers pointed out, “so the kind of horse I shop for is longer and stronger than the typical hurdle type.”
That hurdle type, however, is relished by such other trainers as Hall of Fame conditioner Jonathan Sheppard.
Sheppard’s Unionville, Pa., operation was responsible for $690,459 of the money dispersed in U.S. ’chasing in 1990, including wins by foreign breds Waroquier (IRE) and Lanhydrock (GB).
Jimmy Lorenzo (GB) seems to fit the bill as an American hurdle type, according to Sheppard.
