One of Susan’s main exercise riders, Gus Brown, said of the training program at Rockburn: “I’ve worked for Mr. Ohrstrom for about five years. In the past, any horse with extraordinary capability was sent off to Burley Cocks to run from his farm in Pennsylvania.
“But since Susan has been here, we are getting more of the retired flat runners to stay here,” — to be trained in Virginia by Ohrstrom’s farm trainer.
Susan Cooney’s first winner as a steeplechase conditioner' came from one of those retired flat runners.
“It certainly will be my most memorable, and first, winner ever. Tryall, who was through on the flat, was a homebred of Mr. Ohrstrom’s. He won at Fairfax and Middleburg last fall.”
Unfortunately, a nasty twist of racing luck took Tryall’s life. In a bad spill at the Far Hills race meet two weeks later, the fouryear-old broke his leg.
