Cooney, who is six feet tall, stayed exclusively with the jumpers, growing weary of reducing to keep within flat weight limits.

In 1986, Cooney and a few friends decided to visit the United States, stopping off at Delaware Park to witness American training and riding methods.

Cooney returned after that summer, coming back in 1988 to stay. He started in Saratoga, riding work for Mickey Praeger and other flat trainers.

He traveled south during the winter with Praeger to Camden, and the rest, as they say, is history.
