Mrs. Cooney has her own roots near Chicago, where she grew up in a relatively “nonhorsey family.” At age nine, Susan “begged and begged and finally got a horse. Not a pony,” according to Mrs. Cooney, “but a horse.
“He was a 17.1-hand thoroughbred. Fortunately, for me, he was as kind as he was big.”
From the “horse-crazy” teenager stage, she decided to go to college, earning a bachelor of science in animal science from the University of Illinois, Champagne.
The degree was followed by a master of science in breeding farm management from Texas A&M.
