Pat Cooney continued his Irish winning ways in the United States, beginning with a pick-up mount for Jonathan Sheppard in Tryon, N.C., and getting a break with Cocks when several riders were hurt.
In the winter of ’89, Middleburg trainer Paul Fout asked the young Irishman to come to Northern Virginia. Susan decided the change would do her good as well, and the couple moved to Fauquier County.
Susan Cooney was soon snapped up by the Rockburn Stud to move in as trainer for the spring of lay-ups, young stock, and the occasional jumper or jumper prospect.
“Mr. Ohrstrom is such a great horseman,” said Susan. “He enjoys his breeding program so much. He really doesn’t breed his mares to necessarily produce two-year-old winners, for instance. He likes his timber horses best of all.”
