or from the doctor’s office for an elderly relative, friend or neighbor, those who gather trash along the roadway, those who help to shingle an friend’s roof or offer service at nutrition sites, those who help at the animal shelter or the local library, those who help with elementary school classes, high school activities, or volunteer fire departments or those who assist with literacy volunteers.

The list is endless.

“People naturally do many of these things,” Ms. McEvoy said, adding community service includes such things as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, United Way volunteers or 4H activities.

“It’s anything people do for other people and not get paid for,” she said.

“Many people do these things without thinking ‘Wow, I could have gotten a food package,’ ” she said, adding now there is a reward of sorts for those who do help.

But the food package, arriving once a month from Bladensburg, Md., does not have to support the doer of the deed.

‘They can give it away to someone who needs the food,” Ms. McEvoy said, adding many who do volunteer work may not need the extra food but can donate it to a family with need.

“It’s about enough food to feed a family for a week,” she said, adding in July the grocery sack of food contained 15 items ranging from chicken to head lettuce to white potatoes to cheese danish to elbow pasta and fresh or boxed fruit.
