Jerry Wood, Democratic Party candidate for the 31st District seat in the House of Delegates, believes the transportation problems in Northern Virginia should be solved by developing a regional mass transit system.
“I think continuing to build bigger and bigger highways is a complete waste of money and land,” he said.
Mr. Wood noted that more than half of the workforce in Fauquier County commutes to Northern Virginia, and citizens involved in such commutes overwhelmingly say that transportation is the most important issue for them.
He said that Fauquier belongs to the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance, and he believes that the members of that alliance should form a regional transportation authority to build a regional network with an emphasis on mass transit. “I’m against the Western Bypass," he added.
On the problems of drugs and crime, Mr. Wood said the nation and state have been trying to concentrate resources on catching the major dealers. Mr. Wood does not believe that has had much effect on the problem and he said he would favor concentrating more on mandatory-sentences for the drug pusher on the street. “I think you have to start at the bottom and work up,” he said.
Mr. Wood said he sees the problems caused by drugs regularly in his business as a pharmacist. “We need better procedures for handling people who need rehabilitation and better follow-up with those people,” he said.
