“The environment there was unbelievable,” he said. “They asked me to talk just to listen to my accent.”
It was a two-year school. He later got a bachelor’s degree in agricultural chemistry from the University of Wisconsin and a doctorate in bio-organic chemistry from the California Institute of Technology.
While he was at Caltech, he met and married his wife- Margaret. Even then he was interested in country dancing and met her at a dance. She volunteered to help him demonstrate a polka.
