or others, steeplechasing is a new-found passion, and the International Gold Cup Races, held the third Saturday in October at Great Meadow in The Plains, is a wonderful initiation to the sport of jump racing.
It all began in County Limerick, Ireland, more than 200 yers ago when one Irish hunting man challenged another to a race from steeple to steeple, the church steeples being the most visible landmarks in the open country.
That first match race had the basic elements of modem steeplechase racing: speed, obstacles, and spectators.
Today’s steeplechase race has no steeples, but the course fences are the evolutionary remnants of the obstacles Mr. O’Calloghan and Mr. Blake encountered during their spirited race crosscountry from Buttevant church to Saint Mary’s Doneraile in 1752.
