The postmark helps tell you the first stop on your letter’s travel itinerary.
The rest of the itinerary really depends upon the way the letter is prepared. Metered mail with applied barcodes that correspond to the destinating address is sent straight to the automated equipment. Stamped mail makes another stop, depending on whether the address is typed or hand written.
