If I had known six months ago that before the summer was over I’d be exercising every day, it would have saved a lot of self-esteem and potato chips.

I acknowledged that it was time to tackle my weight problem when the only ego boost I could offer myself in the morning was, “Hey, great-looking ear lobes!” I immediately draped all my mirrors so that only my face was reflected and started asking people how they kept in shape.

None of them, it turned out, were doing it the way I was (ordering small fries instead of large at Burger King). I heard about the benefits of joining a ladies’ volleyball team, of bicycling, of running and walking ... yawn.

I considered resuming my weight training. But although I enjoyed working out at The Weight Room in Warrenton, I knew I needed some major-league aerobics — and nothing is more deadly than 20 minutes on a HealthRider accompanied by Howard Stem.
