According to Hoysa, there is great local interest in growing organic foods. His office fields many questions from gardeners about minimum-effect and alternative chemicals for growing and protecting plants.
“I would like to avoid the insinuation that food store food is bad,” he said. “When there has been a problem with chemical residues and the like, it has come from imported foods. Domestic food is inspected, and we have wide safety paths.”
There is a definite trend in home gardening to use the organic or least toxic way to treat plant problems, according to Hoysa.
Gardeners should take logical steps before resorting to chemfeal treatment of insects, including:
• Identifying the insect pest; 5
• Determining if it is really harming the plant;
• Determining if pests are present in significant numbers to harm the plant, and
• Coming up with alternatives to chemical insecticides.
All plants have their own “defense systems,” which produce toxins to ward off pests, according to Hovsa.
