In reality, explained Larry Stephenson, acupuncture raises the level of endorphines in a person. An endorphin is any of several peptides secreted in the brain that have a painrelieving effect like morphine.
Acupuncture does not work on a patient who is on narcotics, said Larry Stephenson. “Narcotics stimulate the secretion of endorphines and acupuncture does not work in a saturated system.”
Though it may look painful, acupuncture does not really hurt, said Larry Stephenson. “We use filiform needles that are fine like hair. It feels more like a pin prick,” he said. “A needle developer told me that he modeled his needle on the sting of a bee. You don’t feel a bee sting until the venom hits you.”
Acupuncture needles are not manufactured in the U.S., said Larry Stephenson. They are imported from China, Korea, Japan, France or Italy.
The neurologist, who has been practicing since 1982, took up acupuncture in 1992.
