There is nothing magical about those little jars of baby food in the supermarket.
They offer healthy nutrition for your infant; many carry no preservatives, salt or sugar. But any parent can create healthy baby food at home, with only a food processor or blender and — really — just a little time.
Ingredients
Feeding a baby specially prepared cereals mixed with formula or breast milk teaches a baby how to swallow solid foods. Once the cereals have been tried, it’s time to coax some veggies into that tiny waiting mouth.
Carrots, sweet potatoes, beets and peas are good first foods.
Use fresh vegetables; steam or bake until soft. (Boiling removes nutrients.)
Serve one new vegetable each week and watch for signs of allergic reaction. Serving fruits before vegetables may condition the baby to expect food to be sweet; they may reject vegetables.
After several vegetables sure sampled, fruits to be tried include bananas, peaches, pears, apricots and apples. Apples need to be baked until soft, but canned fruits puree easily. When using the canned versions, make sure to buy them in their own juice, without added sugar.
