She sits dressed in black, her turquoise-polished fingers busy creating a grim rhythm on the drums.
Drumming is only one form of spiritual healing that Denise Hershkowitz Horton offers at the IRIS Centre for Shamanic Studies ... & Studio in Washington, Va.
“Shamanism is an ancient healing tradition and way of life,” said Horton. “It involves healing and empowerment through personal transformation and direct experience, as well as the healing of families, communities and environment.”
A psychologist by profession, Horton founded the IRIS Centre three years ago. “We offer meditation classes, hypnotherapy, body workouts, plantspirit essences sessions, guided imagery and sonic drumming,” said Horton. “We also provide a lot of literature and books to our clients.”
Shamanism goes back some 1,000 years, said Horton. In every culture, there were Shamans or medicine men who used nature to help people connect with their inner God. They used herbal medicine, crystals, drumming and altered state of consciousness for spiritual and emotional healing.
