“These naturally occurring toxins, produced when the plant is under stress, can be carcinogenic or have other negative effects,” he said. “But you would have to eat tons of that vegetable to be harmed by it,” he said.
Hoysa also cautioned that some truly organic products are as toxic as their artificial counterparts. He cited rodonone, a plant-root derivative, as being as powerful as man-mede sevin. “It will kill any insect it comes in contact with,” said Hoysa.
With the growing popularity of organic gardening, researchers and scientists have discovered new natural ways to battle pests.
“Insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils can be sprayed on pests, suffocating them,” said Hoysa. “A beneficial insect coming along later will not be harmed,” he explained..
These advances will help preserve the balance of nature, but the importance of learning proper methods — and reading the directions — cannot be over-emphasized, said Hoysa.
