Gilmore campaign has distributed bumper stickers that say simple, “No Car Tax.” He will use the issue extensively in television advertising.
Gilmore’s identification with the issue clearly worries the Beyer camp since his “light” tax credit version does not seem to resonate as well with prospective voters. Beyer has attempted to portray Gilmore as anti-education and anti-environment, but Gilmore cleverly counters that since Beyer has no philosophy of his own he has opted to run a negative campaign. That may play well with people who recall Beyer’s negative assault on Republican lieutenant-governor nominee Mike Farris four years ago.
Most everyone I speak with seems to believe that the gubernatorial race will go down to the wire and there won’t be any runaway winner. And they also think that none of the statewide campaigns has so far generated the kind of excitement that the electorate felt in 1993. Thus a relatively low turnout may be in the offing, particularly when one considers that a small percentage of House of Delegates seats are being contested.
