from cord blood are unique in that they are undeveloped cells. When used in transplantation, the cells result in less rejection and increased compatibility between the donor and recipient, according to the Cord Blood Registry.
“About 40 percent of the desperately ill patients who need bone marrow transplants never get them because a donor who is an exact match can’t be found through family connections or by the National Marrow Donor Program. Two reports in the July 18, 1996 New England Journal of Medicine strongly suggest that many of these patients could be helped by transplants of stem < i cells from placental blood — which is routinely discarded after babies are delivered,” wrote The Harvard Health Letter in identifying the procedure as one of the top ten medical advances of 1996.
Available immediately, cord blood can also help save the lives of donors’ siblings. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, there is a significantly higher percentage of event-free survival and fewer side effects with related cord blood as compared to unrelated or donor blood. The medical journal reported in 1995 that 48 percent oi unrelated cord blood transplants lead to event-tree survival while 72 percent of related transplants • result in event-free survival.
