When it comes to alternative forms of medicine like herbs, Ussery says, their benefits have been well known for centuries. “Pharmaceuticals are just a recent discovery. Herbs have been used for thousands of years.”
Jackie Colvin, an advertising representative, says her extensive interest in herbal remedies has prompted her coworkers to jokingly refer to her as “voodoo woman.”
Having studied herbal medicines for years, Colvin began to use them regularly when her first child was bom.
“I became the most serious when I Btarted having kids because I didn’t want to be constantly running back and forth to the doctor’s office.”
Unlike most traditional medicines, she said, herbs have few side effects and are “geared more toward healing rather than treating symptoms.”
Colvin dabbled in many alternative medicines but found herbs to be the quickest and the most effective.
“I’ve had so many good results using herbal remedies,” Colvin said. She keeps several tinctures ( herbs preserved in glass jars often with varying amounts of alcohol) in her desk at work alongside a box of Kleenex and often is consulted by coworkers for cures to their ailments.
“I haven’t been to the doctors for colds or anything like that for years,”
