Tharpe added, “Real strong runners find riding a bike to be better for their hips and knees. In-line skating is also a great cardio-vascular and lowerbody workout, which is good for improving balance.”
Resistance training, working out with free weights, can develop upperbody strength for runners and cyclists alike.
“Upper-body training, for cyclists, tends to be neglected,” Tharpe said. “Cycling works mainly the lower body and cardio-vascular system, but it is important to have strong arms and upper body, especially on climbs.”
Sieber added, “Unless you’re a marathon runner, total-body conditioning will make a better runner and help prevent injuries.”
