Reilly says that for those more interested in the physical fitness aspects of riding, a 20-minute posting trot, three times a week, is equivalent to any exercise which raises the heart rate for aerobic fitness. It also works the large muscle groups in legs, arms and back, the level of which depends strictly on what type of horse is being ridden: a racehorse requires more muscle strength than a trail horse.
“Best of all, the health benefits for juniors are great in that riding is a lifetime sport,” Reilly concludes. “Unlike field hockey or prep school football, riding is a sport that is easy to continue into adulthood, and the physical and mental benefits of working with horses are great.”
