New parents now have an additional weapon against certain life-threatening diseases including leukemia, other cancers and blood and immune disorders.
In the late 1980s doctors began using umbilical cord blood to treat diseases that previously had been treated with bone marrow transplantation.
Parents, upon the birth of a child, can have the blood from the umbilical c(|rd extracted and banked for future use.
