Mere m Virginia, most sassafras trees are small. I see them everywhere; they line rural roads like loving sentinels. The sassafras tree is not So easy for me to name from a moving car in summer as in winter. Without leaves, the branches are seen to grow out from the main trunk at a 90 degree angle and end with upturned clusters of twigs that appear to me like bony fingers clutching at the winter sky. • I went through twelve books (some my own, others from the library) in researching this piece on the sassafras tree.
