There is a recent industry buzz term called “civic journalism” that attempts to define what some papers are doing today. This approach aims to raise the profile of the paper in the community by engaging the newspaper in a more active community role. Newspaper staff members join the boards of community organizations, and editors throw the full weight of the newspaper behind community projects. This movement is like fingernails on a chalkboard to some journalists who resent being force fed the projects by their booster bosses. Unless handled with care, the approach may tilt the balance of objective reporting.
