contributions to the community, we encourage staff to help with community projects they feel strongly about. These are mostly non-political, volunteer efforts that sometimes call for newspaper support in the form of promotion of extra coverage.
We have gone so far as to create a position in our company, Director of Community Development, to build ties with certain community groups. It is staffed by a truly community-minded person, Su Webb, who coordinates projects for us around Northern Virginia. Su came to us several years ago with a parade of charitable works already under her wing. Since that time, we’ve opened our doors to dozens of good causes through corporate sponsorships, staff involvement and fundraising.
Currently, our newspapers are supporting 77 projects in the region. In Fairfax County, for instance, we back the Greater Reston Arts Council (GRACE), where I serve as a board member, and we publish
